The role:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead work on all product stages (from research and development to design and manufacture) of our precision pesticide sprayer machinery. The goal is to design and fabricate mechanical components of innovation, excellence and maximum reliability. This is a unique opportunity to use your experience to push the boundaries of smart products in the agriculture industry and, in doing so, become an integral part of the Cordon team.

 

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Cordon, you will play a key role in defining and refining the mechanical systems in our machinery. You will be contributing to a major product launch and will be responsible for driving product development work, from conception through to delivery. The goal is to craft mechanical components and systems that not only meet but exceed the demands of modern agriculture, ensuring reliability, safety, and groundbreaking performance. By your one-year mark you will have fostered strong collaborations across the different disciplines in our team, ensuring seamless integration of mechanical designs with electronic and software components, thereby enhancing product functionality and user experience.

 

This is primarily an on-site role due to the nature of the work however there is the opportunity for some hybrid work.

Key responsibilities:
  • Lead full lifecycle product development (specification, design, develop, test prototypes, manufacture and implement), for our precision sprayer chassis and mechanical systems, including spray booms.

  • Develop, and maintain the mechanical design documentation for our precision sprayer.

  • Specify and design production-ready mechanical systems and components that meet rigorous user and safety needs and requirements, aiming for usability, and reliability.

  • Conduct methodical experiments (both theoretical and practical at our workshop and at test and customer vineyards), analyse data, and interpret results to inform design decisions and improve product performance, reliability and safety.

  • Collaborate closely with other functions including electronics engineers, software developers, and others to deliver integrated solutions that meet our product goals.

  • Develop strong relationships with key external suppliers and potential partners.

  • Help with prototype and product assembly, conduct testing, validation, and troubleshooting of electronic systems to ensure performance and reliability at our workshop and at test and customer vineyards.

  • Document designs, specifications, test procedures, and results for internal and external stakeholders.

We're looking for someone who:
  • Embodies our core values of curiosity, problem solving, resilience, humility, emotional intelligence, and commitment to collaboration.

  • Can use practical approaches to build effective physical products quickly and to a high standard.

  • Holds a Bachelor's, Master's, or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with at least 5 years of experience in fast-paced industrial design, development, and testing environment.

  • Has been instrumental in successfully delivering mechanical engineering projects in the past in the agri-tech, robotics, consumer products, or small scale automotive fabrication industries.

  • Familiarity with 3D engineering design and manufacturing tools (especially SolidWorks).

  • Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) experience.

  • Hands-on experience with computer-aided engineering (CAE) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM).

  • Demonstrates clear and effective communication, capable of conveying technical concepts in an understandable manner.

  • Is committed to learning and innovation, with a knack for identifying and solving emerging problems.

Desirable characteristics

- Experience in prototype development for production.
- Mathematical computing and analysis tools knowledge (Python, Excel, LabView etc).
- Working experience with product lifecycle management (PLM), and finite element analysis (FEA).

- A willingness to mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative team environment.

- A strong interest in sustainable agriculture.

If you are successful at this stage, we'll arrange an initial phone/video call where one of the team will explain the position, introduce Cordon and get to know a little bit more about you (30 minutes).

 

Successful candidates at this stage will then be invited to an on-site interview, including hands-on activity, and presentation of a previously prepared technical task. They will also meet the rest of the team with tea/coffee (2.5 hours).
